Another Voice Joins the Debate

The Virginia Way has joined the debate on the so-called marriage amendment.  Here’s how they describe who they are:

This website, and the campaign for political moderation and civility it seeks to promote, were born of disappointment in the tone of political discourse in Virginia today.

In seeking models for a better method of conveying ideas, we were inspired by the example of Virginian James Madison who, with New Yorkers John Jay and Alexander Hamilton, authored a series of arguments in favor of the ratification of the United States Constitution. The Federalist Papers, as the essays came to be called contributed to the successful campaign for ratification.

For us, “The Virginia Way”, as practiced by James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and the other great founders of our commonwealth, encompasses:

  • Intelligent debate instead of mere sloganeering and appeals to base emotions;
  • Moderation and the acknowledgement that the common good often requires a balancing of differing values and schools of thought;
  • Pragmatism, and
  • A strong belief in religious pluralism and the separation of church and state.
  • Welcome to the conversation!
